If you’re a teenager, or you just don’t earn money on a regular basis, saving can be really hard. You constantly take back everything you put in your piggy bank, next to your bed.
But hey, that awesome Game of Thrones t-shirt was worth it, wasn’t it?
The thing is, there’s always something you will want, and you have to set your priorities straight. Do you prefer to buy another t-shirt now, or save to buy a pair of jeans because the ones you own are starting to get a bit worn-out?
AT HOME
#1: Buy yourself/customize a little box, or a piggy bank, anything that would contain money.
Mine’s an empty Glossybox, in which I cut a hole that would allow me to put money through it.
(I could post some ideas of what to do with empty boxes, it’s really simple and they do come in handy, just let me know if you’d like that!)
#2: Whenever you earn money, only keep bills and anything over 1/2€, $1/2.
Put what’s left in your box. It might take a while, but if you really need money, this is a great way to save without actually putting those 50 dollars your aunt gave you which you really wanted to use. Because if you do that, it’ll probably stay there one week.
In France, we have this system of plastic stuff in which you put a certain amount of cents in order to put them in your bank account later. I don’t know if you have these, but they look like this:
#3: Enjoy birthday and xmas money.
When it’s xmas/your birthday, you usually get some money (if you celebrate xmas). For example, I received 70€ for both this year (they’re around the same date, that’s why I got everything at the same time). I already had 150€ waiting to be spent. And I knew I had to save money for both the sales, which were coming up, and Dublin, where I was going two weeks later. So I thought: let’s take 100 for the sales, 50 for Dublin. I don’t need those 70€, and I won’t be using them for a while. So I decided to put them in my box. Let me tell you, it helps a lot more than cents. But everybody just doesn’t get pocket money (I don’t).
#4: Try odd jobs.
The reason I had those 150€ was because I had done some babysitting a few days before. Odd jobs are really great because some don’t take much of your time. For example, I had to take care of 3 kids, two of whom were 9 and 10, so I just had this four-year-old little boy, for an entire afternoon. It was nice, and I earned 70€. Pretty cool, huh?
When I say ‘odd jobs’, it could be anything. Babysitting, dogsitting… Also, if you’re doing great in a subject at school, you could post an advertisment saying your name, your age, your grade, your level in this subject, and the money you would like per hour. Although I have never tried this, I know how popular it is among students. I think that, in America, it is possible to deliver the newspaper. Try it out!
WHEN YOU’RE GOING OUT
#1: Eat before you go out.
If you’re going out late, make sure you eat before you go. Snacks and fastfoods aren’t so expensive, but put together, you could earn 15€/$20. Moreover, you’ll get to eat something healthier (or not).
#2: Take a drink with you.
Preferably water. If you ate before going out, this will help you to not eat snacks. If you haven’t, it’ll probably make you less hungry. Drinks are pretty expensive! Plus, water’s awesome for your skin and body! Yay!
#3: Only shop the sales.
Don’t worry, that awesome t-shirt will still be there, and it’ll be cheaper!
#4: Look up what you want on the Internet before going to the store. (By Aline)
If you already know what you’re going to buy, you won’t look around and think ‘ha! This seems cool. Let’s buy it. I’ll save another time’ (but you won’t). Moreover, this way, you know exactly how much money you need to bring with you. So, even if you wanted to cheat, you couldn’t (isn’t this evil? I love it.)
FINALLY, MY LAST TIP WOULD BE…
Set a goal.
When you know how you’re going to save your money and you are motivated to do so, you’ll find it much easier to know what’s worth buying and what’s not. I, for example, am saving money to be able to live on my own next year as I’m going to college. And everytime I want to buy something, I just remind myself that I do have more important things to think of. And it’s really much less of a torture than saving for something you don’t even know yet.
So these were all my tips, I hope you enjoyed them! If you did, do subscribe, as others will be coming! You can also reblog so that your followers and theirs see them too.
Finally, if you have more tips, you can message me so that I add them to this post (I’ll put a link to your blog, of course). And if you have some advice for me, or just something nice you want to tell me, message me! I’ll always answer. [ON TUMBLR]
Hugs,
Jill♥
PS: see how better our piggy bank looks now?
